The Harleian Society

The Harleian Society is a registered charity (no. 253659), established in 1869 and incorporated in 1902*. Its official objects are "the transcribing, printing and publishing of the heraldic visitations of counties, parish registers or any manuscripts relating to genealogy, family history and heraldry".

The Society is known for the quality and scholarship of its publications, particularly its editions of the Heralds' Visitations in the possession of the College of Arms.

On this website you will find a brief introduction to the Society, links to related online resources including back copies of our publications, and details of how to obtain our current volumes.

The latest publication is Cases in the High Court of Chivalry 1634-1640 (New Series vol 18). Edited by Dr R J Cust and Dr A J Hopper, it consists of abstracts of 738 cases held in the court over this six year period, the busiest in its history. Many relate to actions for scandalous words likely to provoke a duel, and others cover disputes about social rank and the right to arms
