Abstract by Steven Edwards - 26 Mar 2004
The author, Henry de Peyster was French, his family having returned to Europe from New Orleans in the 19th century. The name de Peyster means shepherd. The family is first mentioned around 1270-1325 in Ghent, Belgium, and they may also have been known as van Laethem or van Zwyaerde as both places feature in the early family history. The branch that subsequently adopted the name Goethebuer had feudal rights in Laethem. The de Peysters became heavily involved with the guilds in late medieval Ghent, with a particular interest in financial matters, ie banking. Members of the family were ennobled in the 14th to 16th centuries. The Arms are described and illustrated in the article. An extensive genealogical descent table starts with Jean de Peyster, treasurer of the Abbey of St Peter, Ghent, who died 1345. He had at least 3 sons, of whom Jean (d.1368) gave rise, several generations later, to Jean de Peyster (b.1626) who emigrated to New York where he married (1651) Cornelia van Elburch. They were progenitors of the American branch of this family.
