Review by Steven Edwards - 20 Sep 2002
This book is attractively laid out with lavish colour illustrations, designed no doubt to appeal to the popular reader. Nevertheless it is a scholarly work with modern translations of extracts from contemporary medieval chroniclers, with a parallel interpretive text. The five parts deal respectively with the origins of the Angevin dynasty in the 10th century, Geoffrey Plantagenet (1128-1154), and the three English kings, Henry II, Richard I and John. The book ends with John's death in 1216. The chroniclers include Gervase of Canterbury, Ralph of Coggeshall, John of Marmoutier, Henry of Huntingdon, Ralph of Diceto, William FitzStephen, and Gerald of Wales. Their material varies from lively apocrypha (John of Marmoutier), to meticulous history (Ralph of Diceto).
