INTRODUCTION

This document sets out information on some Portuguese noble families.  It is far from complete as few Portuguese primary sources have so far been consulted.  As with the document CASTILE & LEÓN NOBILITY (1), many of the relationships are confirmed only in the Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos which, as discussed further in the Introduction to that document, is unreliable.

Chapter 1.    BRAGANÇA

MENDO Alão de Bragança

m --- "Pss of Armenia", daughter of ---.  She was abducted by her future husband while on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela[1].  The Livro Velho records that "D. Mendo Alão de Bargança" abducted by force "hum filha d´elrey d´Armenia qui hia em romaria a Santiago"[2].  She has not been traced in Armenian sources and it is not known whether "Armenia" represents her correct geographical origin.

Mendo & his wife had two children:

1.         FERNANDO Mendes "el Viejo" de BragançaThe Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "Fernan Mendez el Viejo, D. Oroana Mendez" as the children of "Don Mendo Alano de Bragança"[3]m TERESA Soares, daughter of SUERO Mendes de Maya & his wife Ervillida Núñez.  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Goda Soarez, D. Gontrode muger de Ayres Perez de Traba, D. Teresa Soarez, D. Elvira, D. Mayor, Monjas" as the children of "D. Suero Mendez el Bueno de Maya" and his second wife "D. Ervillida Nuñez", recording in a later passage that "Fernan Mendez el Viejo" married "D. Teresa Soarez"[4].  The Livro Velho records that "D. Fernão Mendes", son of "D. Mendo Alão de Bargança" and "hum filha d´elrey d´Armenia", married "filha d´elrey D. Affonso de Castella o que ganhou Toledo"[5], presumably indicating Alfonso VI King of Castile but no other record has been found of such a marriage.  Fernando & his wife had one child:

a)         MENDO de BragançaThe Livro Velho names "D. Mem Fernandes" as son of "D. Fernão Mendes" and his wife[6]Senhor de Bragança.  m SANCHA Egas, daughter of EGAS Gosendes de Riba Douro & his wife ---.  The Livro Velho records that "D. Mem Fernandes", son of "D. Fernão Mendes", married "D. Sancha Viegas filha de D. Egas Gosendes de Riba Douro"[7]Mendo & his wife had two children:

i)          FERNANDO "el Bravo" The Livro Velho names "D. Fernão Mendes o bravo e Ruy Mendes" as the children of "D. Mem Fernandes" and his wife[8]Senhor de Bragança de Langroiva e Noman (in Galicia).  [m firstly ---.  The possibility of an earlier, otherwise unrecorded, marriage is suggested by the logic used to explain the identity of Fernando´s known wife Sancha Henriques in light of the apparently contradictory sources, as discussed below.]  m [secondly] [as her second husband,] SANCHA Henriques, [separated wife of SANCHO Núñez de Barbosa,] daughter of HENRIQUE Conde de Portugal & his wife Teresa de Castilla Queen of Portugal (-after 1147).  Sousa records her parentage and marriage, adding that she died “sem successaõ”, but he cites only Antonio Brandaõ´s 1632 Monarchia Lusitana and the Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos[9].  Brandaõ quotes a charter dated 1147 under which “Sancia reginæ Taresiæ ac comitis Henrici filia” donated “hum Casal em Saõ Pedro de Gostem” to Braga ”cum concilio mariti mei Fernandi Mendes[10].  The Nobiliario does not support Sousa´s statement at all: it records the wife of “D. Fernan Mendez el Bravo Bragançon” as “D. Teresa Alonso”, daughter of Afonso I King of Portugal by "D. Elvira Gualtar", adding that the king had separated Teresa from her previous husband “don Sancho Nuñez” with whom he had fought[11].   The Livro Velho does not name the wife of "D. Fernão Mendes o bravo" at all[12].  The mid-14th century Nobiliario and Livro Velho cannot be considered reliable sources for events which occurred more than 200 years earlier, in the absence of corroboration from earlier documents.  The Braga charter must therefore be preferred.  Barton, citing Mattoso, on the other hand names Sancha Henriques as the wife of Sancho Núñez (whose marriage to an unnamed daughter of Conde Henrique is confirmed above)[13].  One solution to the problem would be if Sancha married both noblemen in turn, as reported by the Nobiliario, which would have merely mistaken her parentage and her name.  Let us also recall that the Nobiliario states that “Teresa” died childless by her marriage to Fernando.  Transposing the situation to Sancha Henriques, it is therefore possible that she was Fernando´s second wife and that his son Pedro was born from an earlier marriage.  This suggestion would also fit with the Livro Velho not referring to Pedro´s mother by name.  Fernando & his [first] wife had one child:

(a)       PEDRO de Bragança .  The Livro Velho names "D. Pedro Fernandes" as the son of "D. Fernão Mendes o bravo" and his unnamed wife[14].  Senhor de Bragança.

-         see below

ii)         RUY Mendes .  The Livro Velho names "D. Fernão Mendes o bravo e Ruy Mendes" as the children of "D. Mem Fernandes" and his wife[15]

2.         OUROANA de BragançaThe Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "Fernan Mendez el Viejo, D. Oroana Mendez" as the children of "Don Mendo Alano de Bragança"[16].  The Livro Velho records that "D. Fafes Sarracins" married "D. Ouroana Mendes irmã de D. Fernão Mendes o velho de Bargança" and lists their descendants[17]m FAFES Sarracins de Lanhoso, son of ---.  Ancestor of the families of Lanhoso, Godinho, and maybe Sotomayor.

PEDRO de Bragança, son of FERNANDO Mendes "el Bravo" Senhor de Bragança & his wife Sancha Henriques The Livro Velho names "D. Pedro Fernandes" as the son of "D. Fernão Mendes o bravo" and his unnamed wife[18].  Senhor de Bragança.

m FLOR Sánchez de Barbosa, daughter of ---.  The primary source which confirms her parentage and marriage has not yet been identified.

Pedro & his wife had four children:

1.         VASCO Peres Veirom .  The Livro Velho names "D. Vasco Pires Veirom e D. Garcia Pires e D. Nuno Pires e D. Tereja Pires" as the children of "D. Pedro Fernandes", son of "D. Fernão Mendes o bravo", and his unnamed wife[19]m ---.  The name of Vasco´s wife is not known.  Vasco & his wife had two children:

a)         NUNHO Vasques .  The Livro Velho names "Nuno Vasques e D. Orraca Vasques" as the children of "D. Vasco Pires Veirom", son of "D. Pedro Fernandes", and his unnamed wife[20]

b)         URRACA Vasques .  The Livro Velho names "Nuno Vasques e D. Orraca Vasques" as the children of "D. Vasco Pires Veirom", son of "D. Pedro Fernandes", and his unnamed wife, adding that Urraca married "D. Vasco Fernão Pires Pelegrim irmão dos Lumiares" and listing their children[21].  It should be noted that the Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Urraca Nuñez" as the child of "D. Nuno Perez de Bragança" and his wife "D. Elvira Mendez", adding in a later passage that "D. Fernan Perez Pelegrin" married as his first wife "doña Urraca Nuñez de Bragança"[22].  However, her patronymic indicates that she was presumably the daughter of Vasco.  m firstly CAYO Monis Ossorio Ribeiro, son of --- .  m secondly as his first wife, VASCO FERNANDO Peres Pelegrim, son of ---.

2.         GARCIA Peres de BragançaThe Livro Velho names "D. Vasco Pires Veirom e D. Garcia Pires e D. Nuno Pires e D. Tereja Pires" as the children of "D. Pedro Fernandes", son of "D. Teresa Perez" as the children of "Don Pedro Fernandez Bragançon"[24]m GOUTINHA Soares Carnesmas, daughter of SOEIRO Mendes Mãos-d´Aguia & his wife condesa Elvira de Faya.  The Livro Velho records that "D. 3.         NUNHO de Bragança .  The Livro Velho names "D. Vasco Pires Veirom e D. Garcia Pires e D. Nuno Pires e D. Tereja Pires" as the children of "D. Pedro Fernandes", son of "D. Fernão Mendes o bravo", and his unnamed wife[26]The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "Garcia Perez de Bragança, D. Nuno Perez de Bragança, D. Teresa Perez" as the children of "Don Pedro Fernandez Bragançon"[27]Senhor de Bragança.  m ELVIRA Mendes, daughter of MENDES Nunhes de Ribaduero & his wife Oroana Mendes de Sousa.  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Gontina Mendez, D. Teresa Mendez, D. Sancha Mendez, D. Elvira Mendez" as the children of "D. Mem Moniz de Ribaduero" and his wife "doña Oroana Mendez de Sousa", adding in a later passage that "D. Nuno Perez de Bragança" married "D. Elvira Mendez"[28]Mistress (1): MARIA Fogaça, daughter of ---.  The Livro Velho names "Ruy Nunes e Froilhe Nunes" as the children of "Nuno Pires filho de D. Pero Fernandes de Bargança" and his mistress "Maria Fogaça"[29].  Nunho had two illegitimate children by Mistress (1):

Tereja Pires" was mistress firstly of "Lourenço Martins de Berredo", by whom she had "Alda Lourenço…casada com Martim de Barbosa irmão de Fernão Pires", and secondly of "o infante de Molina"[33].  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "Garcia Perez de Bragança, D. Nuno Perez de Bragança, D. Teresa Perez" as the children of "Don Pedro Fernandez Bragançon", a later passage naming "D. Teresa Perez" as the mother of "D. Berenguela…D.
