Following the Scottish War of Independence King Robert the Bruce sought to gain recognition for Scotland as an independent nation by sending a letter to the Pope in 1320. This has become known as the Declaration of Arbroath. The letter was sent on behalf of the nobles and barons of Scotland, many of whom were named in and attached their seals to the document. The project started in 2018 at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and was sponsored by the FMG. It involved both students and staff at the university carrying out research into these individuals and their families. There is also involve a genetic genealogy strand, to discover previously unknown descents from these individuals through DNA testing. Link to the project website. Plans for a touring exhibition and other events were necessarily curtailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The full project report was published in 2020 [ISBN 978-0-9546812-3-4] and can be ordered through the FMG web shop.
