INTRODUCTION

 

 

This document sets out some Spanish noble families from the later 14th century onwards but is far from complete either in its coverage or in the details of the individual families covered.

a)         PEDRO López de Ayala .  Señor de Campos, Albudeite y Levadura.  Alférez mayor del Pendón de la Banda 1367, as such present at the battle of Nájera.

Pedro...de mi fija Doña Teresa, Priora...de las Sorores de Santo Domingo el Real”, dated 15 Jun 1395[11].  Prioress of Santo Domingo el Real.  An epitaph in Santo Domingo el Real records the death 31 Aug 1424 of “Doña Teresa de Ayala, Priora deste Monasterio, hija de D. Diego Gomez de Ayala, Alcalde Mayor de Toledo, y de Doña Ines de Ayala[12]Mistress of: PEDRO I "el Cruel" King of Castile and León, son of ALFONSO XI "el Justo" King of Castile and Leon & his second wife Infanta dona Maria de Portugal (Burgos 30 Aug 1334-murdered Montiel 22 Mar 1369).

Chapter 3.    BIEDMA

 

 

1.         RODRIGO Íñiguez de Biedma “el Mozo”, son of ---.  Señor de Ortalança.  Caudillo mayor of the bishopric of Jaén[15]m JUANA Díaz de Fines, Señora de Fines, Alba de Tormes and Salvatierra, daughter of DIEGO Díaz de Fines [DIEGO Sánchez II de Fines] [Castilla-León] & his wife Juana Ruiz de Haro (-1296 or after).  Szabolcs de Vajay records Juana as the daughter of Diego Sánchez de Fines (the younger) and his wife Juana Ruiz de Haro, but does not cite the primary source on which this information is based[16].  Argote Molina names "doña Juana Diaz" as the daughter of "don Diego Sánchez de Funes" (proceeding on the assumption that there was only one person of that name, as noted above) but does not name her mother, recording her marriage to "Rodrigo Iñíguez de Biedma Señor de Estiviel y Alcayde de los Alcaçares de Iaen" but does not cite the primary source on which this information is based[17]children[18]:

a)         DIEGO Sánchez de Biedmam ---.  The name of Diego´s wife is not known.  Diego & his wife had one child: 

i)          MENENDO Rodríguez de Biedma (-before 13 Jun 1384).  "Men Rodriguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto, hijo de Día Sánchez de Biedma" granted revenue to "su primera mujer doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo, hija de Alfonso Meléndez" by charter dated 5 Oct 1347[19]m firstly MENCÍA Fernández de Toledo, daughter of ALFONSO Meléndez de Toledo & his wife --- (-after 5 Oct 1347).  "Men Rodriguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto, hijo de Día Sánchez de Biedma" granted revenue to "su primera mujer doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo, hija de Alfonso Meléndez" by charter dated 5 Oct 1347[20]m secondly TERESA Manrique, daughter of ---.  Her marriage is confirmed by the charter dated 13 Jun 1384 under which "…doña Elvira de Biedma, hija de dicho Men Rodríguez y de su segunda mujer doña Teresa Manrique" received part of her father´s property[21]Menendo & his first wife had one child: 

(a)       SANCHA Méndez de Biedma .  A charter dated 13 Jun 1384 records the division of the property of "Men Rodríguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto y…de doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo señora de Mocejón" between "sus hijas doña Sancha Méndez de Biedma y doña Teresa de Biedma, mujer de Alfonso Fernández Portocarrero, y doña Elvira de Biedma, hija de dicho Men Rodríguez y de su segunda mujer doña Teresa Manrique"[22]

Menendo & his second wife had one child:

ALFONSO Enríquez, illegitimate son of FADRIQUE Alfonso [de Castilla] Señor de Haro & his wife his mistress "la Paloma" [a Jewess] (Guadalcanal 1354-Guadalupe monastery 1429).  A later Abreviada (Continuator) of Ayala´s Crónica de Juan I names “Don Alfonso Enriquez, fijo del Maestre Don Fadrique, hermano del Conde Don Pedro, que es Almirante de la mar” when recording his marriage[25].  Legitimated.  Adelantado mayor de León.  Señor de Medina de Rioseco, Aguilar de Campos, Valdunquillo y Bolanos.  Almirante de Castilla. 

m as her second husband, JUANA de Mendoza "la Ricahembra", widow of DIEGO Gómez Manrique Señor de Amusco [Adelantado mayor de Castilla], daughter of PEDRO González de Mendoza Señor de Hita y Buitrago & his wife Aldonza de Ayala.  A later Abreviada (Continuator) of Ayala´s Crónica de Juan I records in 1380 that “Diego Gomez Manrique” married “Doña Juana fija de Pero Gonzalez de Mendoza”, adding that “su madre de Diego Gomez” [referring to Pedro Manrique] married secondly “Don Alfonso Enriquez, fijo del Maestre Don Fadrique, hermano del Conde Don Pedro, que es Almirante de la mar[26]

Alonso & his wife had twelve children: 

1.         FADRIQUE Enríquez (-23 Dec 1473).  Almirante de Castilla.  Conde de Melgar y Rueda.  Señor de Medina de Rioseco.  m firstly (1430) MARIANA de Ayala Córdoba y Toledo Señora de Casarrubios del Monte, daughter of DIEGO Fernández de Córdoba & his wife Inés de Ayala Señora de Casarrubios del Monte (-Dec 1431).  m secondly TERESA de Quiñones, daughter of DIEGO Fernández de Quiñones Señor de Luna & his wife María de Toledo.  Fadrique & his first wife had two children:

a)         JUANA Enríquez (1425-[Zaragoza/Barcelona] 13 Feb 1468).  Señora de Casarrubios del Monte y Arroyojolinos.  She took an active part in negotiations with the remenças to end the civil war in 1462, but was besieged in Girona with her son Fernando by the forces of the Generalitat led by the count of Pallars.  Rescued by French forces led by Gaston de Foix 23 Jul 1462.  m (Torrelobatón 1 Apr  1444) as his second wife, Infante don JUAN de Castilla y León, JUAN II King of Navarre, son of FERNANDO "él de Antequera" King of Aragon & his wife Leonor Urraca de Castilla (Medina del Campo 29 Jun 1398-Barcelona 19 Jan 1479, bur Nuestra Señora de Poblet).  He succeeded in 1458 as JUAN II King of Aragon

ALFONSO Pérez de Guzmán "el Bueno", illegitimate son of PEDRO Núñez de Guzmán & his mistress --- (24 Jan 1256-killed in battle 9 Sep 1309, bur Monasterio de San Isidro, near Seville).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "Alonso Perez de Guzman" as the illegitimate child of "D. Pedro Nuñez de Guzman"[30]Argote Molina quotes a letter written by his son Juan Alfonso which records the birth of his father 24 Jan 1256[31]Señor de Medina Sidonia.  The Crónica del Rey Fernando IV records that “Alfonso Perez de Guzman” defended “el Andalucía...por la Reina muy bien”, dated to 1296[32]Argote Molina quotes the inscription in the monastery of San Isidro which records the burial of "don Alonso Perez de Guzman" who died 9 Sep 1309 in the battle with the Moors which followed the capture of Gibraltar "en la sierra de Gavsin"[33]

m MARÍA Alfonso Coronel, daughter of FERNANDO González Coronel & his wife Sancha Iñíguez de Aguilar (-15 Oct 1322).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "Juan Fernandez Coronel, D. Maria Alonso" as the children of "Fernan Gonçalez Coronel" and his wife "D. Sancha Vazquez de Cuña", recording in another passage that "Alonso Perez de Guzman", illegitimate son of "D. Pedro Nuñez de Guzman", married "D. Maria Alonso"[34]Argote Molina records her parentage and marriage, adding that "Conde don Pedro en el tit. 22" calls her mother "doña Sancha Vazquez de Acuña"[35].  Argote Molina quotes the inscription in the monastery of San Isidro to "doña Maria Alfonso Coronel…muger que fue de don Alonso Perez de Guzman el Bueno" who died 15 Oct 1322[36]

Alfonso & his wife had three children: 

1.         JUAN Alfonso de Guzmán (-before 1367).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Juan Alonso de Guzman, D. Isabel de Guzman, D. Leonor de Guzman" as the children of "Alonso Perez de Guzman", illegitimate son of "D. Pedro Nuñez de Guzman", and his wife "D. Maria Alonso"[37].  Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I names “grandes parientes...Don Juan Alfonso de Guzman Señor de Sant Lucar de Barrameda é de Bejer, é Don Alvar Perez de Guzman Señor de Olvera...” of “Doña Leonor de Guzman” present at Medina Sidonia, when the body of King Alfonso XI passed through the town in 1350[38]m URRACA Álvarez Osorio, daughter of ÁLVARO Nuñez Osorio & his wife --- (-murdered 1367).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos records that "D. Juan Alonso de Guzman" married "D. Urraca Alvarez, hija de Don Alvaro Nuñez Osouro"[39].  Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I records that King Pedro ordered the death of “Doña Urraca Osorio, madre [de] Don Juan Alfonso de Guzman” in 1367[40].  Juan & his wife had two children: 

a)         ALFONSO Pérez de Guzman (-killed in battle Orihuela 1365).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Alonso Perez de Guzman, D. Juan Alonso de Guzman Conde de Niebla" as the children of "D. Juan Alonso de Guzman" and his wife "D. Urraca Alvarez, hija de Don Alvaro Nuñez Osouro"[41]Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I records that “Don Alfonso Perez de Guzman fijo de Don Juan Alfonso de Guzman” was killed in battle at Orihuela in the kingdom of Murcia in 1365[42].  m as her first husband, LEONOR Enríquez Señora de Melgar, Villalba y la Higuera, daughter of ENRIQUE Enríquez Señor de Villalba y Nogales & his wife Urraca Ponce de León.  "Juan Rodríguez Palomino" swore homage to "doña Leonor Enríquez mujer de Alfón Pérez de Guzmán e hija de Enrique Enríquez" for "el castillo de Villalba", notice dated 3 Mar 1367 (O.S.)[43].  She married secondly, as his second wife, Fernando Ruiz de Castro Señor de Lemos y Sarria. 

b)         JUAN Alfonso de Guzmán (-5 Oct 1396).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Alonso Perez de Guzman, D. Juan Alonso de Guzman Conde de Niebla" as the children of "D. Juan Alonso de Guzman" and his wife "D. Urraca Alvarez, hija de Don Alvaro Nuñez Osouro"[44]

2.         ISABEL de Guzmán .  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Juan Alonso de Guzman, D. Isabel de Guzman, D. Leonor de Guzman" as the children of "Alonso Perez de Guzman", illegitimate son of "D. Pedro Nuñez de Guzman", and his wife "D. Maria Alonso", a later passage recording that "D. Fernan Perez Ponzo" married "D. Isabel"[45]m FERNANDO Pérez Ponce de León, son of FERNANDO Pérez Ponce de León & his wife Urraca Gutiérrez de Meneses. 

3.         LEONOR de Guzmán (Ceuta Apr 1287-Seville after 23 Jul 1341).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos names "D. Juan Alonso de Guzman, D. Isabel de Guzman, D. Leonor de Guzman" as the children of "Alonso Perez de Guzman", illegitimate son of "D. Pedro Nuñez de Guzman", and his wife "D. Maria Alonso", an earlier passage recording that "D. Luis de la Cerda" married "D. Leonor"[46].  Señora de Huelva.  The testament of "doña Leonor de Guzmán señora del Puerto de Santa María" is dated 23 Jul 1341[47]m (Seville 1306) as his first wife, LOUIS de la Cerda, son of ALFONSO de la Cerda de Castilla, Señor de Alba, Bejar y Gibraleón & his wife Mathilde de Brienne-Eu (in France [1291]-La Motte du Rhône 5 Jul 1348).  Seigneur de Talmont 1339.  Pope Clement VI created him "Prince de Fortunie" granting him the suzerainty of the Canary Islands 15 Nov 1344.  Comte de Clermont et de Talmont, Admiral of France.

m BEATRIZ de Castilla Señora de Niebla, illegitimate daughter of ENRIQUE II "él de las Mercedes" King of Castile and León & his mistress [Leonor Álvarez] (-before Jun 1409).  Her parentage and marriage are confirmed by the charter dated 26 Jun 1409 under which [her sister] “Doña Leonor fija del Rey D. Enrique...Señora de la villa de Duenyas” recorded that “en Sevilla la Condesa Doña Beatriz mi hermana, muger que fué del Conde Don Juan de Niebla” bequeathed property to “Don Enrique Conde de Niebla é á Don Alfonso é á Don Juan...sus fillos legítimos”, that she had deprived “mis sobrinos sus herederos” of certain of the property, and therefore that she bequeathed property to them[50]

Juan & his wife had three children:  

1.         ENRIQUE Pérez de Guzmán (-1436).  Conde de Niebla, Señor de Sanlúcar de Barrameda.  “Doña Leonor fija del Rey D. Enrique...Señora de la villa de Duenyas” recorded that “en Sevilla la Condesa Doña Beatriz mi hermana, muger que fué del Conde Don Juan de Niebla” bequeathed property to “Don Enrique Conde de Niebla é á Don Alfonso é á Don Juan...sus fillos legítimos”, that she had deprived “mis sobrinos sus herederos” of certain of the property, and therefore that she bequeathed property to them, by charter dated 26 Jun 1409[51]m (1405) as her first husband, VIOLANTE de Aragón, illegitimate daughter of MARTIN I "el Joven" King of Sicily & his wife his mistress Agathe de Pesce (-before 1428).  She married secondly Martín de Guzmán.  Enrique & his wife had one child: 

a)         JUAN Alfonso (1410-1468).  Conde de Niebla.  He was created Duque de Medina Sidonia.

ÁLVARO Pérez de Guzmán, son of NUÑO Guillén de Guzmán & his wife Teresa Álvarez de Manzanedo Señora de Brizuela (-after 1280)Salazar y Castro records his parentage, adding that he and his wife were ancestors of the condes de Orgáz and señores de Gibraleón[56].  Señor de Fuentes, Brizuela y Manzanedo. 

m ---.  Salazar y Castro records two different wives for Álvaro in two different sections of his work: in one part, he states that she was MARÍA de la Cerda Señora de Gibraleón, without giving her precise parentage[57].  In a later part, he says that she was URRACA Alfonso, illegitimate daughter of ALFONSO X "el Sabio" King of Castile & his mistress ---[58]

Álvaro & his wife had three children: 

1.         PEDRO Núñez de Guzmán .  Salazar y Castro records his parentage[59]m MARÍA de la Cerda, daughter of ---.  Salazar y Castro states that Pedro Núñez de Guzmán, son of Álvaro Pérez de Guzmán, married "doña María de la Cerda"[60]However, in another section of his work, he says that "doña María de la Cerda Señora de Gibraleón" was the wife of Pedro´s father[61].  Her parentage has not been ascertained.  Some secondary works state that she was María Alfonso, illegitimate daughter of Juan Alfonso de la Cerda [Castilla] Señor de Gibraleón, and the connection with Gibraleón makes this an attractive possibility.  The uncertainty about her paternity is noted by Dupont[62].  Pedro & his wife had one child: 

a)         ÁLVARO Pérez de Guzmán .  Señor de Olvera.  Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I records that “Don Juan de la Cerda fijo de Don Luis é Don Alvar Perez de Guzman Señor de Olvera” defected from King Pedro I in 1357 and went to Andalucía, triggered because the king wished to take “la muger de Don Alvar Perez, que era Doña Aldonza Coronel fija de Don Alfonso Ferrandez Coronel, hermana que era de Doña Maria Coronel muger del dicho Don Juan de Cerda[63]Don Enrique de Trastámara created him Señor de Gibraleón 1366 in recognition of his loyal support in the war against Pedro I "el Cruel" King of Castile.  m firstly (1335) URRACA Affonso, daughter of JOÃO Affonso de Portugal Senhor de Arouça & his wife Juana Ponce de León.  m secondly (before 1357) ALDONZA Coronel, daughter of ALFONSO Fernández Coronel Señor de Aguilar & his wife Elvira de Biedma.  Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I records that “Don Juan de la Cerda fijo de Don Luis é Don Alvar Perez de Guzman Señor de Olvera” defected from King Pedro I in 1357 and went to Andalucía, triggered because the king wished to take “la muger de Don Alvar Perez, que era Doña Aldonza Coronel fija de Don Alfonso Ferrandez Coronel, hermana que era de Doña Maria Coronel muger del dicho Don Juan de Cerda[64].  She became mistress of Pedro I King of Castile: Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I records that in 1358 King Pedro captured “Doña Aldonza Coronel...” from “[el] Monasterio de Sancta Clara” in Seville, adding that they had met when she had sought a royal pardon for her husband during a truce in the war between Castile and Aragon, and placed her “en la Torre del Oro, que es en la tarazana[65]Álvaro & his first wife had two children:
